Germany on Thursday welcomed the success of pro-European forces in the Dutch election and heavy losses by the far right, saying the result would bolster eurozone crisis-fighting.
I wonder if Europeans would fight as hard for each other if they wouldn’t spend as much time in their neighbor’s country on holiday. Of course, there is an economic reason for all this, and it’s good for businesses large and small to stick to a unified currency and try to work this out together. But aside from the economic reasoning there is an emotional understanding necessary to be willing to “do what’s good for the larger community” and not just stick to your own naval-gazing. Perhaps all those family Summer vacations at the Mediterranean are paying off now at the voting booth?
