Beautiful article in ESPN magazine about everything that’s right about the Sounders.

The stats:

Per game, the Sounders outdraw the Mariners almost 2 to 1

And:

Merchandise sales are on a par with the Seahawks

And coach Sigi Schmidt:

“For everyone in American soccer,” says Sounders coach Sigi Schmid, “I always tell people, you have to make a pilgrimage to Seattle. What you hoped soccer would be, it’s actually like that here.”

This is how the Sounders won the heart of the region and is conquering the world:

Take the world’s game and make it their own.

Last weekend I took my 7 year old son to his first game starting a tradition and rooting in him a love for the most beautiful game in the world. Seattle you make me so proud and I don’t feel bad a bit that I am cheating on my original home team VfB Stuttgart.

The Sounders are the future of soccer for my family!

Interesting twist. While the website sits there almost forgotten, the writers and editors have been busy behind the scenes working on an eBook that’s for sale on Amazon.

Buy This Book Before You Buy Facebook: A PandoDaily Expert Guide To The Internet’s Biggest IPO

And given that it just launched a couple of days before the IPO, I wouldn’t be surprised if all resources where pulled from actually working on the website and poured into making the eBook happen.

I’ve been calling for Pando to lead the way in finding a new way to monetize content, and I must admit that this is an interesting new approach – kudos. That’s the kind of stuff I wanted to see.

I wonder if the eBook will be a success and lead to more of this kind of content. Pando could essentially become a publishing house rather than just a news blog. Or if the eBook was just a one-of project, trying to cash in on the Facebook IPO media hype and now that it’s over, almost, resources can be reallocated to actually developing PandoDaily as a proper Tech news outlet. Especially in the light of the recent rumors, it has some competition again.

If you are proud American you buy yourself an Annual National Park pass. It’s the patriotic thing to do!

A pass is your ticket to more than 2,000 federal recreation sites. Each pass covers entrance fees at national parks and national wildlife refuges as well as standard amenity fees at national forests and grasslands, and at lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management and Bureau of Reclamation. A pass covers entrance and standard amenity fees for a driver and all passengers in a personal vehicle at per vehicle fee areas (or up to four adults at sites that charge per person).

Six months in, absent visionary editorial leadership and running out of cash having hired too quickly, you may find yourself in financial trouble, with an audience that frequents your content by necessity but which, when all is said and done, simply doesn’t like you very much.

I agree with much every word and I am glad to read that he hates the Meebo Bar too.

What I am curious is that aside from the editorial criticism which is definitely valid and something I don’t really have much value to add (I’m writing this blog not in my native tonuge, and I am aware of my challenges) I am curious if The Kernel has a better monetizing strategy. Of course, everything is better than a Meebo bar, but blogs are incredibly hard to monetize in a elegant way and I am curious if The Kernel has figured it out. I believe we all would like to know.
