  • Messi Documentary Asks The Question

Is he the best player in the world?

I’ll call him the greatest player of our time when he won a World Cup. 2016 the World Cup will be in Brazil. It’s on Messi’s continent and European teams always had a hard time outside their continent. This might be his year. But Brazil will certainly have a word to say about that. And with Spain’s win in South Africa in 2010 the spell of European countries winning outside their own continent might be broken.

The tough part about the documentary is that everyone being interviewed is heaving praises on Messi at this young age, making him already immortal. But I remember Ronaldo from Brazil and as fast as he climbed the ladder of success as hard he hit rock bottom. One injury and it can be over. I don’t wish it for him. But immortal players always have a certain amount of luck on their side they  stay healthy and find helpful club/trainer relationships. Currently Messi has that in Barcelona, but they won’t win the league this year, and it will be tough for them to win the Champions League as well. We shall see.

    Dead For 78 Minutes

    The Telegraph:

Fabrice Muamba had to be brought back to life on Saturday night after spending nearly an hour and 20 minutes without his own heartbeat, his medical team have revealed.

Incredible story of survival, nothing short of a miracle.

    That’s The Mariner I remember

Not often do I link to a Baseball story, but this article in the New York Times on Jamie Moyer is fantastic.

“If I came here and found out I really didn’t have the desire or I didn’t have the stuff, then I’d know,” Moyer said. “But if I didn’t try it, I think I’d always be wondering. And I don’t like living my life that way.”

    Soccer Is Coming

    Pich Invasion takes it apart:

According to a recent survey – the latest “Luker on Trends — Powered by the ESPN Sports Poll” - soccer has finally joined the mainstream and become one of the Big Four sports in the United States along with football, baseball and basketball.

Soccer is now mainstream in the USA.

    Angry Birds Goes Formula One

Finnish Formula 1 driver and closet Angry Birds enthusiast Heikki Kovalainen is going public with his love for the Rovio game by agreeing a new sponsorship and co-branding deal with the gaming company.

    Brilliant!

    Ballack to New York?

Ballack announced that he wants to end his career overseas. New York is being rumored.

That would make the third German player who transfer to a MLS team.

Thorsten Frings is playing since last season in Toronto FC and Arne Friedrich just signed with Chicago Fire.

United States National Team Soccer Head Coach Jürgen Klinsmann has a podcast – amazing!

When Do They Start Counting Soccer

What The Fuck people. Start counting all sports to determine if a city is unsuccessful in sports or not, Stupid Forbes. The Seattle Sounders won two US Open Cups back to back and the Seattle Storm won two championships in the past 10 years and are dominating the league.

Cheap journalism and linkbait doesn’t just happen on blogs, traditional magazines and newspapers have done this for a long time.

    On Dangers In The Mountains

Whenever I hear of people dying in the mountains I always freak out and never want to participate in mountaineering or winter sport again, especially now that I have a family. And aside from trying be respectful to the families there is often that little piece in the article that makes me think:

The skiers and the snowboarder had been in out-of-bounds areas bordering the resorts. High avalanche warnings had been issued for some areas Sunday.

What I’ll Be Doing This Coming Thursday

Snowboarding – just not as cool as that guy.

    Sounders Sign Forward Eddie Johnson

… US National Team forward Eddie Johnson, who joined the Sounders in a trade with the Montreal Impact on Friday, adding a veteran of 41 appearances with the Stars and Stripes…

Fantastic high-profile signing from the Sounders.

Sad to see Neagle and Fuchito go, but I’m getting excited for the new season. This will be the year Sounders fans.

    Also, welcome to Seattle Eddie!

Trading always sucks, but it’s hard to read the comments under the article I linked to and realize how hard it must be for a player to come to a team in a trade against two beloved players of the fans.

So, welcome to Seattle. Bring your best, like what we expect from every one and we will love you, cheer for you in the rain and sing your name late into the night!!

    This Is The Year

Germany will win the Euro Soccer Championship this Summer and I will have to have one of those amazing jerseys. LOVE.

US Soccer Through A German Eye

In Germany, Jürgen Klinsmann’s success as a football trainer was limited. But as the coach of the US national team, he can experiment as much as he likes. He wants his team to reflect America — and he wants to win.

The German news media continues to keep track of Klinsmann here in the US. Fun to read their perspective on US soccer.

    Zakuani Is Coming Back

    Grant Wahl on Zakuani’s recovery:

Zakuani isn’t there yet. Not quite. The last stages of the recovery process could take a while, to go from part-time to full-time training, to playing reserve games, to making the 18-man roster for MLS games and finally becoming a starter again. He still needs to regain full sensation in his right foot, and that requires time.

    Superbowl In London

League officials are considering holding the Super Bowl’s 50th-anniversary game in the home of that other Big Ben.

That would be London, England and that would be epic.

Tickets are anyway $5000 to see the game. The people that can afford that can easily fly across the pond.

    Superbowl XLVI

    UPDATED:

    What team to root for?

In general I am more of a Boston fan, rather than New York. Boston feels, at least in baseball more like the underdogs. But…

I think I will have to make up my mind after the first quarter.

Check that: Sebastian Vollmer, A German is playing for the Patriots – it’s settled!
