Mark Byrnes:

Tokyo’s Olympic hosting duties are still seven years away. But already, Japan is doing what it can to keep the costs down, a marked contrast to the hoopla that surrounded Beijing and London’s building spree.

The Japanese are probably the only country that will get away with this in the eyes of the IOC, but it’s the right decision. If you want to ensure a future of the Games that can be held in cities other than the main and obvious metropolises of our world we need to be smarter in the way we approach the Games and associated costs for them.
